I decided to read the essay by Leslie Fieldler, where she is comparing Negros and homosexuals. She talks about the the issues that both of the categories have and how people used to treat both of the issues... to be continued.

The counsil of Cotati, Barich took a picture of himself with his face painted balck and dressed like a black person. Many people tought that it was inappropriate and very racist. He argues that it was completaly harmless and that it is ridiculous that people would even think that we meant it in a harmful way to blck people or to any other race.
I think its not that big of a deal like people say it is. He just painted his face and could have just hang out with his friends have a good time. if you really thik about it, if a black person would have painted their face white it would have never been a big deal. I think people need to stop try to pick on people for doin whatever. If he wasnt a counsil this would have never even hit people at all so then it would have been ok but now that he has something to do with the community people start talking about what he does and why.

The Use of the N word

In the book that we are reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the author uses the word nigger a lot. This is very hard for some people to read because of their culture and the way they grew up things they learned and also because of their race.
In my opinion the author uses the word in the text so the readers can better understand the time period the story was written and the way people felt about racism. Even though it is offensive to some people the word makes the story more realistic than if he would have used something else just to make us more comfortable reading it. This way the book makes a bigger impact on us and we can really feel for black people at that time.
Using the word in today’s society is completely different. In the old times it was a symbol of slavery and it also showed that black people had no power in the society so they had to take everything that other races would call them or make them do. Today if you call someone that name it is probably the most disrespectful thing you can do. It reminds them of the past and also today the word has changed. The meaning is a lot different than it was before. There are also other words that offend other races. This one applies to the black community I can imagine that it is like a trigger word for them. There are trigger words for many people it doesn’t even have to be for a specific race it can be just for individuals that just by hearing it can bring out certain emotions. The word nigger brings bad memories, disrespect and strong emotions for black people that’s one of the reasons why they are so sensitive about the word.
In my life when people call me names I normally try to blow it off and not care because people who call others names they intentionally try and insult you and most of the time it doesn’t really mean much but it’s really hurt full. In one of my other classes we were talking about trigger words, the words that bring up emotions, either good or bad. One of the really common things people say now days is gay, faggot etc. referring that something is bad. Many people don’t realize that when they use these words everyday just out on the street many people around them may belong the gay community and it may be hurtful for them to hear this, relating to the word nigger the same. A trigger word for black people, brings up negative emotions.

Topic 1. The N Word

For my essay i still need to brainstorm a lot but i will most likely talk about how the word can be very offensive to people and the how that is, also will compare it to what are some of the words that people use to call me and how do those words make me feel, maybe that way i will have a better understanding for myself how black people feel when others call them names like this. i will also address the topic of why it is important in the book to use the word to make a deeper impact on the readers or to just show the historical time period, and how people viewed black people around them.

My group identified satire as talking about something serious but with a humor and sarcasim. It also has something to do with irony. A good satire is basically making fun of something to make a point, bring attention to something most people dont pay attention to...just to make them think about it.. to show them an exaggertion of the trueth. An example of satire would be The Cobert show where they make fun of polititians even thoght the topics are serious.

I think Jim from the book is a real character, a real person. That is the way black people talked and acted at that time period becuse they were slaves and they counln't be eduated. I dont think Jim is a minstrel because the minsterls make fun of the people that are like that. So in a way i thinks minsterls represent Jim.. maybe an over played version of Jim, beceuse they are trying to make fun of him.

Looking around in everyday life, i do agree with the idea that racism is way better now than it was before. people of different race are much more accapted than they were before and blanded into society. Just lookin at sings and posters and ads, there is still a lil racism hidden many places.
Also not just race but gender. Many things are more about man not women because women are stereotyped as the weeker ones and man should be the ones handeling all the important things. That has changed a lot too since wwII because the women had to enter the work force to help the country and this way they bacome much more independent. Today women can do just as much if not more than man but we still have the general idea that man should be the head of the house.

The images and the quote, makes it clear that today the children think that being over weight is a bad thing. I believe that the images of the two people just sitting, eating and watching television send a clear message that this is wrong and you should not be doing this. I agree. Being over weight is not helthy at all, you can develop many illnesses from it and most definately will limit your options in many things in life. Most people could control that and do something about them being over weight. I think America needs more options to educate children from a young age that being over weight has consequences and that before it happens they can prevint it, by eating healthy and regirarly exercising. The pictures show the two people just watching televevision or being on the computer and eating, they are not envolved in any healthy activities so there is no way they could be deffernet.
On the other hand with the quote, I dont agree. Being over weight is not a disability. Sometimes in even classrooms people think they can take the disabled chairs and tables, just because they are bigger. Now that is wrong, people who are obiese are not disabled because they were not borned with that that is just a lifestyle they adopted to, but they can most definately do something about it.

People’s Perception of Me

Ever since I was little I had to meet a lot of new people. My family and I had moved a couple times, and even when I didn’t move I changed schools and friends and environments. By having to adopt and meeting so many new people, how they view me and perceive me it comes down to first impression.
I think now days when I meet people I generally have a good first impression on them. Since I work in a restaurant I don’t come off as shy, or unintelligent, because I meet a new family or couple every ten minutes while I am working. I developed a general sense of how people like to be talked to, the tone and I can naturally tell if they are looking for a conversation or just want to be left alone.
I think this has helped me be better at holding a conversation, reading people and knowing just how to be around certain people. I honestly believe that talking to people and being good at it helps you a lot in life. Take it for example if you wanted to get a job, you have to go through interviews. If you just generally know what happens in interviews and you are prepared that’s a half win, but if you can hold an interesting conversation with the interviewer, they will most likely remember you and consider you as highly possible to get the job. That is the only reason why I think that every job I so far applied to I got it. Not because I am so great at my school or I was full of experience but because I interview well and I can express myself on a way that comes across positive. Even if you have no idea about the things you will be doing at your job because you have never done it before, if you can openly be honest and tell them, assuring them that you are more than willing to learn, you are earning major points at your interview.
Just in my everyday life, I believe or would like to believe that I also come across in a positive way. I am very open to meet new people all the time, have conversations and make a good impression. I think I come across as a nice person, when I talk to people for the first time I smile a lot try to make a positive and comfortable environment for me and them to talk and get to know each other. I am actively engaged in the conversation and give them feed-back so they know I am interested in what they have to say. I mostly expect people to do the same when I am talking. If they don’t than that’s a sign that they are not interested or bored by what I am saying so then you know that there is time for you to change the subject.
Just based on my looks I think sometimes people miss-judge me. Maybe put me in a stereotype with blonde girls, who cares a lot about their looks and spends a lot of money on their clothes, which is true but I think there is a lot more to it, when you actually get to know me. Mostly girls are the ones that would stereotype the other girls like them. I think this is based on bad experiences before, jealousy or just being uncomfortable around other girls because the girls who is making the stereotype is not confident herself. That is why I think that when you are confident and independent from people’s opinions about you, you come across as a better person. Of course you still need to be humble and understanding the situation, so you know when you talk to a girl that is not confident with herself you know the way to talk to her. Like I mentioned before, understanding the type of person you are talking to and reading their body language is so important for me to make the right first impression so people view me as a confident, independent and responsible individual. That is how I would like to be viewed and I believe most people I meet view me that way.

Television Dramatically Effects Families

From the essay that we have read by Winn about the television being a plug in drug I found the idea being true and over exaggerated at the same time. She goes on to say how families don’t spend time together anymore because television takes away from family time. I think she is right and wrong in some ways.
Winn talks about families changing in many ways and television being the only time they actually spend together. I agree with the fact that families have changed over the last thirty to twenty years and family values are not what they were expected before. Each member of the family have their own things to do and that way they don’t have that much time left to be together then they did before when the moms weren’t working, only the dads and the kids were home schooled by their moms. Obviously families have come a long ways from that. In today’s society both mom and dad are working to provide a good living for the family. Until that time the kids are in school getting an education that will help them later on in their live.
After the family is done with their full day, they are so tired all they would want to do is sit in front of the television and relax, turn their brains off, and just stare at whatever is in front of them. That’s the part what I don’t agree with. I do think that even though families are tired from the day, having a nice dinner together, where everyone gets to talk about their day, what happened and why was that important. That would be so much more relaxing and more valuable than just sitting in front of the television and watching meaningless movies.
Some times that would be perfectly fine too, to sit and watch television. I think it is built in our society and many people think that it is absolutely necessary in a house hold. I think that’s wrong. Television should not be the only place where people get their information from. There are many reasons for that. One of them is because the media controls the news and you will only get the side of the story that is beneficial to their network or people who control the network, and also censorship. It doesn’t matter of the story is true or has a twist on it as long as it serves their idea they will deliver it to the public.
Another point that Winn brought up and I thought was very good, that even when families are home together but the parents just let the kids sit and watch television, the parents need to supervise what the children are watching. There are many television shows that you would think they are fine just looking at them, but if you actually sit down and watch them you would never let your child watch it again. Winn said that our children now days are more educated by the television then by their own parents. There are again many reasons for that, but it still doesn’t make it right……. To Be Continued!

This video made me really think about all the things I buy and take for granted are hard works from other people. It just showed both sides of the story really well. We dont really see things like this on tv very much. The media picked a social group that spends the most money and we are the target market for all the comercials like buying shoes or new cars. Then since it was so easy for us to buy those things we dont really think about all the hard work behind the things that other people do, maybe make their only living on. This video made me really sad, and think about being more carefull of what i buy and how I use it.

Watching the video, and reading the article about the two boys not being allowed to wear the shirts to school is ridiculous. In my high school we weren’t allowed to wear red, because that was a sign of you being a gang member. If even after the first warning you continued to wear red you had to go under detention. I think in both of these cases the school was wrong, although one of them was a little more over the top then the other. The kid wearing the shirt about Obama was nothing wrong but the school felt like that it wasn’t appropriate to school because there was a political election going on and the different viewpoints might create conflict between the students and if that was the reason that it’s still not right to ask someone not to wear it, but I can understand to a point. On the other hand, not letting someone go to school because they wore a shirt about Rednecks is over the top. There are a lot of jokes out there that people just need to take, and on the other hand letting people go to school with shirts that has pictures of violence on it doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I think the SRJC is pretty good about this stuff. I trust that we are all adults and can consciously decide what we are going to put on in the morning. If it’s something we want to make a statement with, so be it. That’s why I feel that the little boy had to right to wear the shirt because he was expressing his feelings, he was proud of his president.

My favorite song is by Phil Collins, Paradise. It’s an older song and I have known it for a very long time. I love to listen to the lyrics and picture what is really going on in the song, at the same time it makes me think of all the little situations that we try to just ignore and pretend that it is not even there. Some of us that are lucky to have most of the things we want ignore the people or just don’t even want to think about the less fortunate. Sometimes there are people out on the street that are begging and most people don’t help them out because you never know what they are really going to spend the money on, but there are really people out there who doesn’t have a better choice. Especially now days that the economy is unstable and so many people are losing their jobs. Sometimes even 5 dollars will help someone out a lot. Well anyway, the song for me has a deep meaning and it is a good song. J Listen to it sometimes.
